What A Funeral Costs

The published medians, what they leave out, and the one federal rule that protects you at the funeral home.

NFDA Median Costs (2023 Study)

Source: NFDA 2023 General Price List Study. The burial median rose 5.8% from 2021 and the cremation median 8.1%, while general inflation over the same period was 13.6%. A newer NFDA national figure had not been published as of October 2026.

What The Medians Do Not Include

Flowers, obituary noticesVaries
Clergy, musicians, receptionVaries

The NFDA medians cover the funeral home's own goods and services; cemetery, monument or marker costs and cash-advance items such as flowers and obituaries are typically billed separately. We do not publish national figures for these because we have not found a reliable primary source; ask the cemetery for its price list.

What Helps — And What Does Not

Social Security

A one-time $255 lump-sum death payment to an eligible surviving spouse or child. Nothing more.

SSA Handbook §428

The FTC Funeral Rule

You are entitled to an itemized General Price List, to buy only the goods and services you want, and to use a casket or urn bought elsewhere without a handling fee.

Cremation

63.4% of deaths in 2025 were followed by cremation (NFDA projection). Direct cremation without a service costs far less than the viewing-and-cremation median — ask for the General Price List.

Why The Timing Is The Problem

A funeral home usually expects payment before or at the service. Life insurance pays within days of a death certificate. Bank accounts, retirement accounts and the estate can take weeks to months. That gap — not the total — is what final expense insurance is built for.
