Final Expense Insurance, Explained Gently
What it is, who it is for, what it costs, and the one decision — health questions or not — that changes the price.

Final expense insurance is a small whole life policy, usually $2,000 to $50,000, sold to people aged 50 to 85 to cover a funeral and the bills a death leaves behind. Most versions ask a few health questions (no exam) and pay the full benefit from day one if approved; guaranteed acceptance versions ask nothing and pay a graded benefit for natural death in the first two or three years. Premiums are level for life, the policy never expires while paid, and the payout is income-tax-free cash to the beneficiary you name.
What It Pays For
The Funeral
Median $8,300 with burial, $6,280 with cremation (NFDA 2023) — funeral-home charges, before cemetery, marker, flowers and obituary.
Final Bills
The last hospital stay, hospice, the ambulance, the medications — whatever Medicare and the supplement did not cover.
Breathing Room
A few months of the household's bills while accounts are retitled and benefits are sorted out. Estates take months; funeral homes take days.

Questions A Final Expense Application Typically Asks
They vary by carrier. Common ones: Are you currently hospitalized, in a nursing home, or receiving hospice care? In the last two years, have you been diagnosed with or treated for cancer, heart attack, stroke, or congestive heart failure? Do you currently use oxygen? Are you on dialysis? Have you been diagnosed with Alzheimer's or dementia? Have you been diagnosed with HIV? A "yes" does not always mean a decline — it may mean a graded tier or a different carrier. That is what an agent is for.
How Much Does It Cost?
Price depends on age, sex, tobacco, the amount, and which door. For guaranteed acceptance we print carrier charts on the guaranteed acceptance page. For final expense with health questions, the price is set by your answers, so we quote it — call or ask for options.
