Buying A Policy For A Parent

How to raise it, how ownership and beneficiaries work, what Mom or Dad has to do, and how to make sure the money lands with the person paying the funeral home.

How It Works

Owner, Insured, Payer, Beneficiary

Your parent is the insured. You can be the owner (you control the policy), the payer (it drafts from your account), and the beneficiary (the carrier pays you). Carriers require insurable interest; a parent–child relationship satisfies it.

What Your Parent Must Do

Know about it and sign. Answer the health questions themselves if the policy has any. Guaranteed acceptance policies have none, but still require the insured's signature. A policy cannot be bought on someone without their knowledge.

Siblings

Name one beneficiary who will handle the funeral, or split percentages. Many families name the sibling who lives closest and agree in writing how the remainder is shared.

If Mom Cannot Sign

A power of attorney may allow you to sign as her representative on some applications; carriers differ. Call and we will check the specific carrier's rule.

How To Bring It Up

"Mom, I'm not worried about you — I'm worried about me and Tom standing in a funeral home with a credit card. Can we take twenty minutes and sort it out so none of us has to think about it again?"

The AARP 2024 End of Life Survey found 63% of adults 45 and over have had an end-of-life conversation with family. The ones who have not usually say it felt morbid. Framing it as "so we are not stuck" moves the conversation from death to logistics.

What To Have Ready For The Call

  • Parent's date of birth and state of residence
  • Whether they could answer a few health questions (current hospitalization, cancer, heart failure, oxygen, dialysis, dementia)
  • The amount: use the calculator; many families land on $10,000–$20,000
  • Who will be the beneficiary
  • Whose bank account pays the premium

Lock The Price This Year, Not Next

The premium is set by the age at purchase and never changes. Every birthday raises the starting price for life. If the conversation has happened, the next step is a ten-minute call with both of you on the line.
